Chapter 11

Sunday dawned bright and sunny. Kelly and Ryder and Logan and I planned to go sailing, which Logan and I were very much looking forward to. At the last minute, Kelly decided to invite Gen and Leo, so six of us had agreed to meet at the marina at two o’clock for an afternoon of sun, sailing, eating, and relaxation.

“Are you going somewhere?” Aunt Charley asked after I’d decided to head over to the main house in search of something to bring for the informal dinner we planned to share.

“Sailing with Kelly and Ryder and Gen and Leo. We’re all supposed to bring a food item to share. The only thing in my refrigerator is bottled water, half a bottle of wine, and moldy cheese.”

“There’s leftover potato salad in the bowl with the green lid, and Emily and the girls harvested apples and pears from the garden yesterday if you want to make a fruit salad. I suppose if you want something a bit more substantial, you can call over to the restaurant and order something to go.”

“I think the potato salad and a fruit salad will be fine. I’ll make up a deli tray for Logan to bring since I forgot to tell him that we decided to have an informal dinner on the beach, and I have some beer and wine in my closet that needs to be chilled. I can toss them into an ice chest with some ice, water, and soda.”

“Call the restaurant and order a couple fried chickens. Chicken will go well with the potato salad.”

Fried chicken did sound good, so I did as Charley suggested. By the time we were loading Logan’s car, Charley had tossed several other food items into the picnic basket.

“Did Kelly ask you to bring enough food to feed an army?” Logan asked as he shifted things around to make room for the second ice chest.

“No. I think we were each supposed to bring one thing, but you know Charley. Once she realized I needed food for the picnic, she began loading me up. If Kelly and Ryder and Gen and Leo each bring as much food as we’re bringing, we’re going to have enough food for a weeks’ worth of meals.”

“I’ll bring the leftovers home to Dad. I’ve been trying to get him to eat more. It seems that his appetite has been on the fritz since he was in the hospital. I’m sure some of Emily and Charley’s home cooking will do the trick.”

“I ran into Liam this past week,” I said as we closed the trunk. “He looks really good. He has a sparkle in his eye and a bounce in his step that I haven’t noticed for a very long time.”

“I think he’s just happy to have me home, and he’s really happy that I agreed to fill in for Henry while he’s away.”

“He hopes you’ll take over the practice.”

Logan nodded as we both climbed into his car. “I know he wants me to stay, and part of me wants to, but I need to be sure.
